Berg describes the Lp system, the first report of lipoprotein(a) (1963)

Kåre Berg's 1963 paper in Acta Pathologica et Microbiologica Scandinavica reports a new inherited serum antigen system in humans, the Lp system, detected with antisera raised in rabbits: the discovery of what became lipoprotein(a). The 'Lp(a) positive' phenotype was inherited as a dominant trait, the first hint that plasma levels of the particle are set by the genome rather than by lifestyle.
